On December 8, 2024, the UMOSS Shipwreck Boat Cruise set sail from Federation Wharf in Melbourne, providing an excellent opportunity for students to celebrate the end of exams. Sponsored by Spectsavers, the event brought together students and faculty for an evening of relaxation and camaraderie.

As the boat departed, participants enjoyed the fresh air and stunning views of the Yarra River. Laughter and conversation filled the air as friends and peers reconnected after weeks of intense study and exams. The atmosphere was buoyant, with everyone ready to unwind and share their experiences from the semester.

The catering was impressive, featuring an array of canapés and refreshments that catered to a range of dietary preferences. The warm and welcoming environment encouraged mingling among classmates and professors alike, bridging gaps and fostering new friendships. Throughout the cruise, students participated in games and activities that allowed them to embrace the light-hearted spirit of the occasion.

As night fell, the boat continued its journey along the river, illuminated by the twinkling city lights. The scenic backdrop made for many memorable moments captured in photographs, serving as a reminder of a successful academic year.

Overall, the UMOSS Shipwreck Boat Cruise 2024 successfully provided an enjoyable and much-needed break for students, marking the end of exams with a sense of community and celebration. It was an event well-received by all and would undoubtedly be remembered fondly by those who attended.

ANNUAL BAKESALE 2024

UMOSS Annual Bake Sale: A Sweet Success for a Great Cause

On the 12th of September each year, the University of Melbourne Optometry Student Society (UMOSS) hosts its much-anticipated annual bake sale. This event not only brings together students and staff for a delicious array of baked goods but also serves a greater purpose: raising funds for the Cataracts Kids Australia charity.

In 2024, the bake sale surpassed all expectations. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers who baked an incredible assortment of sweet treats, UMOSS was able to raise a phenomenal total of $1258.14. This achievement highlights not only the culinary talents of our student community but also their commitment to giving back and supporting a worthy cause.

The selection of goodies was extensive, featuring everything from classic chocolate chip cookies and rich brownies to scrumptious cupcakes and gluten-free options. Each item contributed to a vibrant display that drew in students and faculty alike. The bustling atmosphere encouraged camaraderie and conversations, as people gathered to enjoy treats while supporting a vital organisation.

The funds raised will go directly to Cataracts Kids Australia, an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children affected by cataracts and other vision impairments. These funds will help provide necessary treatments, assistive devices, and educational resources to improve their quality of life.

The success of this event would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation of the UMOSS volunteer team. Their efforts in baking, setting up the sale, and engaging with customers were instrumental in making this bake sale a thriving success. We extend heartfelt thanks to each volunteer who contributed their time and skills – your hard work has made a real difference in the lives of many children.

As we reflect on the success of the 2024 bake sale, we’re reminded of the power of community and collaboration. Together, we not only raised funds but also created an engaging environment that fostered connections among students and staff.
